The Ottawa Gaol (jail) was in use as a prison in Ottawa Canada from 1862-1972. When it was built the prison was said to be a “model prison” for up and coming Canadian times. By the time it was closed in 1972, it was labeled as an unacceptable and torturous prison. No glass on the windows, no heat, and no appropriate sleeping arrangements.
Hostelling International purchased the jail in 1973 and immediately went into doing some remodeling. Today, you may choose to spend the night in a jail cell that people were once sentenced to for any number of crimes. Although now, there is a lot more comfort than they ever had.
