What is Exploring The Obscure?
Exploring The Obscure is a fun docu-series that explores the unique oddities and treasures from around the globe. It’s a show dedicated to tracking down the facts, lives, and history on some of the strangest, but most fascinating and interesting places this world has to offer. Whether it’s a house in the shape of a shoe in York, Pennsylvania, a bright pink lake in Australia, or an abandoned, inside-of-a-mountain, underground airport in Croatia, this world is full of unique and interesting places waiting to be shown to a growing audience. Whether it’s man made, mother-nature made, or a combination of both, we include them all in this one-of-a-kind show. Who is the target audience?
It’s simple. Anybody with a sense of curiosity, males and females from ages 8-108. Anyone who sees a fire breathing dragon bridge, a 185ft Dr. Seuss style house, or a castle made of beer cans will instantly wonder what it’s about and the story behind it. This is what Exploring The Obscure accomplishes. We contact the people behind the wonder, the people who know the truth and the stories of the places we feature in order to get the most accurate information possible. We have almost 40,000 followers on Facebook, as this was our main form of promotion in 2015. In 2016 we are looking into other ways of promoting our existence across other social media forms and outlets.

What we’ve done:
Since the show’s creation in mid 2014 by host Tim Martini-Carlson, ETO has already traveled to, and filmed segments on 5 different continents in 29 different countries. From April 2015 – April 2016 we covered over 92,000 miles (148,000KM) around the world. We have also completed a 31-stop U.S. tour from a desert in Maine to a 4 story castle made of beer cans in Southern Colorado, we spent ten days in Alaska, and in the Yukon. We also visited random spots in Virginia, Maryland, Seattle, Quebec and Alberta Canada. And one week in Puerto Rico. All the specific locations and tours were well-researched prior to the trips and followed up with local historians for accuracy and incredible facts.

We were able to be the ONLY people to ever (in 18 years of existence) get a full interview with Phil Weidner. The man behind the “Dr. Seuss House” aka “Goose Creek Tower” in Telkeetna, Alaska.
Conducted an interview with the 2016 U.S. Presidential Candidate Vermin Supreme. Mr. Supreme was our first ever person to be featured on the show.
People are loving the idea of what we are doing. That is being proven in the ability to get these rare interviews with people who believe, and enjoy the show.

What we have planned:
Summer/Fall 2016: we are working on editing segments and doing some behind the scenes work. We have a trip scheduled to Southern Europe in August, and South America in October with things in the works for September. We are also working on securing a date to visit the oldest bar in the U.S. (New Orleans) which to this day is still lit by candle light. We have confirmed that some of the cast and crew of A&E’s “Nightwatch” will join in on our segment there. As they support Exploring The Obscure and we all support each other in the emergency services role.

How do we afford it?
We actually operate on a shoe-string budget and participate in what we call “strategic budgeting”. Yet, we fool everyone. Without going into detail, we have traveled:
To/from Brazil; to/from Asia; to/from Europe; and to/from Europe/Africa for approximately $1,500 per person total. Amount spent of lodging 26 days across America, $0.
How? Completely legal, completely smart, and completely innovative.

About the host:
Tim Martini-Carlson, is a firefighter/medic (department Public Information Officer), disaster response team member, bartender, Uber driver, tour manager, and merchandise seller. A little bit of everything, but all involving self-promotion and media relations. He currently lives both, outside Washington D.C. and just outside of Toronto, Canada, when not traveling.
Touring and finding interesting spots comes from his time working in the music industry for years, traveling with different bands as a tour manager and/or merchandise seller. He has been out with bands such as Alien Ant Farm, Trapt, Powerman 5000, Straight Line Stitch, Blameshift, Stereotypical Working Class, St Diablo, and many many others. He has been able to use this platform of working in the music industry to his advantage when editing and presenting his segments of Exploring the Obscure. Getting direct permission from mainstream bands to use music without the cost of fees, royalties, and licensing. As well, working with “up and coming” bands in using their music on segments. So when a segment is done and complete, the “up and coming” band will promote it on their social media for their fans to watch, thus creating more fans and attention to Exploring The Obscure. A win-win situation for all.

What does Exploring The Obscure need?

Exploring The Obscure needs a “professional” team. A team of management, camera operators, web team, and someone who can make something bigger happen. Although we operate on a super small budget, we need help in getting to more places, securing better funding, sponsors, and helping with paperwork. We also need some help in promoting and doing more effective ads for Youtube and other media streams. We have been able to achieve over 40,000 fans and followers on our own. Imagine the numbers if we had the help from the right people.
We have no problem doing the leg and grunt work. We have done so much self-promotion just to make one person at a time FULLY interested in Exploring The Obscure and not just “aware.” We had 5,000 postcards made with pictures of some of the most interesting places we have been on them. When they are handed out, it isn’t just a “hey check out my show”, it’s a “hey here’s a show I host,{here’s what we do} and this picture here is a house made completely of trash, here’s a hotel made of snow and ice, and here is a black sand beach which is actually volcanic ash.” At least one of the pictures achieves enough curiosity for the person to look further into what we do. Then, I will have a conversation with them as long or as little as they would like. Anything to not only gain their curiosity, but also to make them feel like they know who I am personally, strengthening the bond, and interest secures another Youtube hit or a follower on social media. It’s also made for a great topic of conversation, and curiousness while driving for Uber around Toronto.
