Located on the eastern coast of Kenya, the Gedi ruins are one of many coastal settlements that dot the African coast. This town was used largely as a trading post.
The settlement was discovered back in the 1920’s by Colonists, who eventually began heavily excavating. Finding many artifacts with the oldest dating back to the year 1041.
The site of Gedi includes a walled village with numerous outlayings of buildings including a palace, mosques and a number of houses. They also have their version of what they used for plumbing, which you can still see today. The village was eventually abandoned in the seventeenth century.
The site is open to the public for a small fee, be sure to grab a tour guide just outside the gates for the best tour around this ancient village.
